Wedding Designs
March 28, 2009My sister’s wedding took place last weekend at Morgansvlei Country Estate in Tulbagh. It is an absolutely beautiful venue in a surprisingly pretty (and not so far away town). I did a few designs for the wedding, which I thought it now appropriate to post here.
The first, and most important was an ambigram of my sister and her husband’s names (Lirize & Marcel). This was a fairly difficult one to do (it took the better part of a week last June to get it to a satisfactory state), but I think it works very well, especially in the context of a wedding.

The first place where I used it was for the invitations. These were designed as a 3-fold horizontal card. The closed card shows just the ambigram. When this is opened (with the outline of the ambigram cut out so as to emphasise its shape, it reveals a photo of my sister, surrounded by flowers. This then finally opens to reveal the details of the wedding. I am very proud of the card, and like that it has a lot more design than meets the eye. Particularly cutting around the ambigram necessitated designing it to not only work as a rotation, but also to have an outline that is symmetrical around the centre of the page.

The final interesting thing I designed was a fan, to be given to the guests as a program for the day. Since Tulbagh is rather hot, and the ceremony was at 16:00 in a small chapel, the fans proved to be not only elegant but also very functional.

Those are GORGEOUS!!! Wow, excellent job! I have never seen such a beautiful font…and the detailing on those fans is just exquisite! Great blog, I look forward to reading more…keep up the fabulous work!

I’m so glad you like my art
In response to your comments on the older post, I probably won’t finish the picture any time soon (as I said the original burnt down with my PC some time back, so all I have left is the screencap shown there).
I haven’t really done any bridal-themed sketches or drawings, but it might be a nice thing to try. If I do do any such pictures I’ll be sure to let you know.
You are indeed brilliant, sir.
I’ve been at a wedding or two where those fans would have been ideal.
But your ambigram – wow.
Hi there… beautiful work. Just wondering how you made the fan. My sister loves it and I am a graphic designer and would love to be able to design something similar for her. Can you order fan making kits or something? It’s lovely!
Hi Sarah
Glad you like the fan! As for making the fans, I bought a lot of cheap Chinese fans, stripped the fabric from them and stuck on my own designs (which were printed on paper). This was a very labour-intensive process, as the paper had to be cut and folded and then fairly accurately stuck to the bamboo frames.
As to making your own fans, I don’t have a great deal more advice than that. I was lucky to find the basic fans very cheaply, and then I designed around those.
